1980, the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was introduced as an instrument for musicians who wanted to compose quickly and easily. At the time, high memory costs prompted Roland's designers to use analog synthesis instead of sampling for their sounds. Thanks to a series of unfortunate accidents, they used unique transistors, creating an inimitable instrument that places the 808 in a separate sound universe. In fact, it did not create 'traditional' or 'realistic' drum sounds, thus being abandoned by many at the time, after only about 12,000 units were produced
