This custom transformer, together with its careful integration with the surrounding Class A circuitry, is essential for the amplifier's sound performance. His sound can be heard on thousands of historic recordings. While most of the harmonic richness of Rupert's designs is the result of the output transformer and surrounding Class A amplifiers, this input transformer provides unique sounds. The technical reasons are mainly the result of the reactive impedance characteristic of the input transformer and how this interacts with the connected microphone, with a fine non-linear harmonic improvement in the bass and an unmistakable softness in the high frequencies. While the input stage for Shelford Channel and Dual Shelford Pre was being created, the goal was not simply to reproduce the classic projects, but to improve them by combining the unmistakable sound of vintage technology with the broadband frequency response, with always excellent amplifier performance with any gain setting and extremely low background noise. To achieve this goal, customized transformer designs have been optimized and full shielding of the input transformer has been implemented in MuMetal. The resulting preamplifier is flat from below 10Hz to above 60kHz, and thus the purest and most versatile sound possible is obtained. What is Silk? The Dual Shelford Mic Pre's unique Silk & Texture circuit allows you to adjust the amount (and type) of harmonic content in the output stage. This means that the sound can vary from transparent settings to others that produce almost 10 times the amount of color of vintage Neve modules. This happens in two unique ways. Whatever sound you're looking for, Silk can help you achieve it. When you apply SILK RED, you are improving the harmonic content generated by the highs and mid-highs of your source. This adds brilliance to the upper end of the band, and is often ideal for sources such as vocals, snare, strings, piano and many other acoustic instruments. With SILK BLUE, you are improving the harmonics generated by the bass and mid-bass of your source. This tends to “reinforce” the signal, making it an excellent choice for drums, bass, heavy electric guitars, male vocals and synthesizers. The dual output level transformers complete the Silk circuit with custom-designed output transformers, which use the particular dual output topology of Rupert Neve Designs. These offer both Main (+26 dBu) and -6dB (+20 dBu) outputs, allowing the sound engineer to bring the preamps to the classic transformer saturation without clipping the converters and other subsequent devices in the audio chain. The main outputs are designed to capture a more pristine sound at high levels, avoiding any non-linear coloring of the output stage. The -6dB outputs allow high levels of gain on the Shelford without clipping the most professional interfaces.
