In 1618, Avedis I, an Armenian alchemist living in Constantinople, discovered a secret process for the treatment of alloys and applied it to the art of making dishes of extraordinary clarity and support. This unique mix of copper, tin and silver is still used in Zildjian dishes today. The alchemical symbols used in the drawing represent each of the metals of this secret alloy, arranged in the shape of a plate.
